TOUR THE SEAQUELL

Acapulco, Mexico -April 15, 1999

Acapulco

Position: Acapulco, Mexico -April 15, 1999

Tamie and her boys, Jack and Reed, arrived along with Grandma Doc and Ken and daughter Kate Bezdicek flew directly from Mpls. to join us for a week in Acapulco. Jack and Reed joined some local kids to fish on the dock. Jack being the legendary fisherman caught a blowfish which most of us had not seen before other than in the souvenir shops. We all watched it blow up on the dock while Captain Peter released it from the hook. His unique protection mechanism increased him to 10 times his normal size. As Jack put the fish back into the water we all watched it return to its normal size and swim away. This was the end of Jack Mexican fishing.

The week was filled with local activities of swimming, international beach volleyball competition and just being tourists on the Acapulco strip. Tamie and the boys spent a day at the water slide park. We left the immediate Acapulco harbor and sailed to Marquees Bay for better water and beaches to enjoy the Mexican warm waters while waiting for spring to come to Mpls. It was convenient to have non-stop air service from Mpls. and nice to be able to spend time with Tamie and the grand kids, as well as good friends and Grandma Doc. She didn't go swimming with us but joined in all of our other activities. The highlight was a Mexican Fiesta which included a traditional dinner and colorful show. The cliff divers were also part of our entertainment.

June left Mexico and returned to Aspen for further work on her new shoulder.

After our 10 days in Acapulco, Todd and his friend Ben Gant joined us in Acapulco and sailed as crew to Coast Rica. We stopped in the Oaxaca area for an overnight rest; golf and dinner for all including the crew at this newly developed beach area. Travel helps some of my misconceptions of geography. While following the coast of Mexico our heading is southeast and at the bottom of the boot we actually go a little north of east along 100 miles of the coast. The south end of Mexico is south of Minnesota.

Leaving this beach we sailed directly to Costa Rica not wanting to stop in Guatemala or Nicaragua due to warnings of their not being too friendly and lack of good harbors. Todd and Ben left SeaQuell at Flamingo in Coast Rica returning to St. Croix.
