Port of Naples, Italy -August 29, 1997
Position: Port of Naples, Italy -August 29, 1997 We sailed from Sardinia to Capri, a 24-hour sail in pleasant weather and spent a day on Capri enjoying the many coves that nature has made with the wind and waves. The Blue Grotto is well known throughout the world and most unusual in its entrance and fascinating colorful glow when inside. Everyone has to lay in the bottom of the row boat to enter the small opening with the boat being pulled through in the trough of the wave. The peak of the wave closes the entrance. The blue glow is beautiful and comes from under the wall below the water. A sight that will long be remembered. Our first mate, Carol, actually went over the side of the boat and swam while inside the grotto. Capri is a small mountainous island only 10 miles off the coast of Italy and is very much a tourist stop with the ferry boats bringing hundreds of tourists every hour during July and August and then the season stops and by November they close for the season. It is beautiful with many lovely sights. The biggest house is a castle owned by the Gerber's Baby Food family. Sorrento and Naples are older cities that have history dating back to B.C. with the biggest claim to fame being Mt. Vesuvius, and the uncovering of Pompeii that was buried in 79 A.D. when Vesuvius blew its top and buried the city. With Naples high crime rate reputation the crew would like to move on to Corfu, Greece while June and John return to Mpls for a business and grandchildren fix. We will be off the boat until September 12th, so no new web pages until after we return. Our email address is 73143.1101 @compuserve.com, or you can use the "Mail SeaQuell" link at the bottom of this web page. See you in September! (Back to Ship's Log) |
