West Coast, San Diego, CA -Nov. 1, 1998
October was another fun filled month on SeaQuell seeing more West Coast
friends, enjoying California things to do and see, plus having the family
join us. We enjoyed our day at the new J. Paul Getty museum. It would
take many days to do it justice, but we saw a lot and would like to
return someday. The new aquarium in Long Beach was a day well spent
with all the colorful corals and fish of the South Pacific. The Queen
Mary, walks on the beach, and beautiful sunsets made our stay memorable.
Our Palm Desert friends Gil and EV Holmes, formally from MN, joined
us along with Walter Corcoran and Rita Mulloy from NY for an afternoon
of sailing, dinner and overnight. Other former MN friends, Dick and
Nancy Winchester, joined us for a nice sail plus a bonus air show and
dinner.
Former business friends from early TV broadcast days joined us for
a day. Gary Grammon and Robert and Eileen Vendeland the originators
of the "ORDER OF THE IRON TEST PATTERN" for the benefit of
all the senior engineers who struggled through the early development
of television broadcast and contributed to its success. Bob has been
most creative in recognizing member's contributions and the many years
of engineering service in the industry. For my years of service in the
television broadcast industry I have been honored by receiving the `Iron
Anchor Award", which was presented to me by Gary Grammon while
sailing out of San Diego aboard our sailing yacht SeaQuell. June and
I thank Gary and Bob for the recognition. Having them on board for a
beautiful day of sailing was our pleasure.
Our Daughters Teri Hooper with children Kaitlyn and Keegan and Tracey
Kirkman with Jonathan, Jeffrey and Jenna joined us for an extended week-end
of sailing, Disneyland, Sea World, playing in the surf and family bike
riding and just plain fun being together. Our Huntington Beach nephew
Terry Jorris and children James and Teresa, Uncle Loren Jorris and Maureen
shared a great Halloween barbecue. We celebrated the cousins - Kaitlyn,
Jonathan and Teresa's birthdays with cousins they had never met before.
It was a wonderful time.
John and Yvonne Nicks and Wanda Guntert, figure skating coaches that
trained our daughters and became long time friends, joined us for a
beautiful sail out of Newport harbor and dinner. This is one of the
special things we enjoy about SeaQuell. It gives us an opportunity to
see and spend time with so many long-time friends and family.
SeaQuell will return to the yard for a few more final repairs before
taking off for the South Atlantic. We sadly said goodbye to our crew,
Carol and Richard Archer who are leaving for further training in England.
Also Patricia Bacon our delightful stewardess will return to her home
in Providence, RI and Chef Karen Murphy will be leaving for her home
in Antibes, France.
